Reduction of cell surface heparan sulfate glycosaminoglycans significantly reduces intracellular lipid accumulation in adipocytes. 3 mM 4-MUmb or pNP-Xyl was added to 3T3-L1 cells concurrently with differentiation reagents as in Fig. 5. Cells were then fixed with 10% formaldehyde, stained with 0.1% Oil Red O and photographed with phase contrast optics (A; magnification, 400×).
